A properly chosen and placed shade tree can be worth thousands of dollars in the resale value of a Texas home. Plus, all the while that it's appreciating in worth, it's also making your life much more enjoyable. It only stands to reason, then, that you'd protect that investment by hiring only highly qualified professionals to work on your trees.

Mr. Neil Sperry and his wife visited Arborilogical Services^® on a rainy October day.

He wanted a "green" building...

It was pouring down rain last Wednesday when my wife and I paid a visit to Arborilogical Services^®, but that was okay. Owner Steve Houser had time to show us around and explain some of the things he and his architect and builder had worked into the facility.

It's 5,000 square feet of very functional office space with a couple of meeting rooms. The roof faces mostly south, and it's 80 percent covered with solar panels. Steve said their electric bill is usually just a couple of hundred dollars a month. Pipes plunge 200 feet into the ground to recirculate water that holds a constant 68 degrees. It's an easy adjustment to boost that up to comfortable room temperatures in the winter, and 68 degrees is a great starting point for cooling in summer.

Tree care after a terrible summer.

When the guy's ringtone is of a chain saw revving, he might be an arborist.

I had a chance to visit with Steve Houser, owner of Arborilogical Services^®, a few days ago as his crew worked 50 feet up in our trees. Steve is highly respected by his crews, his clients and even his competitors. He's been instrumental in bringing trees to the attention of thousands of local residents. He's an advocate for North Texas trees, and he's good at it.

So, there he was in my landscape. What a golden chance to get tree management tips from one of the top guys in town. He had the time, and I had the tablet. Here are some of his feelings on local trees and how they fared following last summer's brutal weather.

Serenity provides quality education in a sober environment.
